The Nasugata Yokode Biri Kyusu is a handmade Japanese teapot made from traditional Banko ceramics and an expressive work of art by craftsman Tachi Masaki. It combines centuries-old craftsmanship with functional design and is ideal for daily Japanese tea rituals - especially for fine green teas.
Banko-yaki (Banko ware) has a tradition of around 300 years and is one of the most important ceramic styles in Japan. The first banko ceramics were created during the Genbun era (1736-1740) in the Edo period, when the merchant Nunami Rozan founded his own kiln in Asahi (Mie Prefecture) - inspired by the "way of tea".
From this origin, a ceramic tradition developed that is valued worldwide and is now recognized as an official Japanese craft. There are still over 100 Banko-yaki workshops around Yokkaichi and Komono in Mie Prefecture.
One of Banko-yaki's trademarks is the use of shidei clay. This iron-rich red Banko clay changes its color to an elegant purple-brown tone when fired in a reduced atmosphere - characteristic of genuine Banko teapots.
Advantages of unglazed clay:
reacts with tannic acids in the tea
reduces bitterness
supports a soft, round aroma
develops a natural, elegant patina with frequent use
This makes the teapot even more beautiful and individual over time.
The Nasugata Yokode Biri Kyusu is a classic Yokode Kyusu (side-handled Japanese teapot). It has been manufactured with high precision to ensure an even, fast and drip-free pour.
Features at a glance:
handmade by Tachi Masaki
ergonomic side handle for controlled pouring
smooth water flow without overflowing
ideal for daily green tea preparation
perfect for Sencha, Kabusecha or other Japanese teas
The harmonious nasugata shape (aubergine-like silhouette) also ensures a pleasant balance in the hand.
