The Nasugata Ushirode Muji Kyusu is a handmade Japanese teapot made from traditional Banko ceramics and a characteristic work by master ceramicist Tachi Masaki. Its classic nasugata (eggplant) shape combines timeless aesthetics with high functionality and makes it an ideal companion for the daily preparation of Japanese teas.
Banko-yaki (Banko ware) is one of the most important tea ceramics in Japan and looks back on over 300 years of history. The first banko ceramics were created during the Genbun era (1736-1740) in the Edo period, when the merchant Nunami Rozan in Asahi (Mie Prefecture) began firing his own tea ceramics - inspired by the way of tea.
Today, banko-yaki is recognized as a traditional Japanese craft and is mainly made in the Yokkaichi and Komono regions of Mie Prefecture.
A central feature of Banko ceramics is the so-called Shidei clay. When fired in a reduced atmosphere, this iron-rich red clay changes its color to a deep purple-brown hue - the typical appearance of high-quality Banko teapots.
Advantages of the unglazed clay:
reacts with tannins in the tea
reduces bitterness
supports a softer, rounder aroma
develops a noble patina with increasing use
The teapot gains character and beauty over time.
This kyusu is an ushirode kyusu, a Japanese teapot with a handle on the back. The nasugata shape (aubergine-like silhouette) ensures a balanced weight distribution and comfortable handling when pouring.
Special features:
handmade by Tachi Masaki
simple "Muji" design without pattern
smooth, precise pouring spout
Ergonomic handle for comfortable handling
ideal for daily green tea such as Sencha or Bancha
The minimalist design emphasizes the natural beauty of the clay and fits perfectly with both modern and traditional tea culture
