The teapot has a yōhen finish. Yōhen means "changed by the flame" in Japanese. When the teapot is fired, the heat in the kiln fluctuates, resulting in colour changes on the surface. This makes each piece unique and gives the impression of randomness, which has both aesthetic and philosophical appeal for the Japanese.
